The Nonprofit Membership Toolkit
Published in Paperback by Jossey-Bass (July, 2003)
Authors: Ellis M.M. Robinson and Kim Klein
Average review score:

Membership Guru Tells All!
Ellis Robinson has helped hundreds of non-profits increase their memberships, both as a trainer and an employee. She's reached almost mythical status for building the membership of Rails-to-Trails Conservancy from 400 to 60,000 in three years. Now she shares her secrets in this easy-to-use guide. Whether you're a new community non-profit or an established national organization, The Nonprofit Membership Toolkit will give you a wealth of information to boost your ranks--especially important in this time of diminishing foundation grants. Ellis doesn't just give you the techniques. She also underscores the importance of developing your organization so that new members will want to renew their support. Her methods are well-rooted in community organizing, with emphasis on one-on-one recruitment, board involvement, and member participation. However, what really sets this book apart from other fundraising books is its use of materials from non-profit groups. Ellis has collected fundraising letters, brochures, surveys, membership plans, etc. from organizations in every corner of the country and presents the cream of the crop as models for your own use. The book is laid out well, with each chapter focusing on one aspect of membership development. As a professional fundraiser, I turn to The Nonprofit Membership Toolkit frequently to answer questions, inspire me to write yet another fundraising letter, or give me new ideas to try. I recommend The Nonprofit Membership Toolkit wholeheartedly to anyone involved with a non-profit organization.

Nursing Today: Transition and Trends
Published in Paperback by W B Saunders (January, 2003)
Authors: Joann Zerwekh, Jo Carol Claborn, and Julie Carol Ellis
Average review score:

Important Read for Nursing Students Entering theProfession
This book includes pertinent topics for nursing students and nurses in practice in the 21st century. Topics such as collaborative practice, conflict resolution, effective communication, managing change within the health care setting are clearly imperative skills that nurses must have. The authors have chosen a writing style that is friendly and easy to read. The importance of humor is stressed through the chapters, but is also present in the form of cartoons/caricatures and delightful illustrations. Nurses often take care of others without tending to their own needs. The authors stress the importance of self-care and nurturing, as well as, assertive communication, strong interpersonal relationships. This is truly an excellent read for nursing students and current nursing practitioners. It is highly recommended especially in today's ever-changing health care environment.

On the Moral Nature of the Universe: Theology, Cosmology & Ethics (Theology and the Sciences)
Published in Paperback by Fortress Press (August, 1996)
Authors: Nancey C. Murphy, George Francis Rayner Ellis, and Nancy Murphy
Average review score:

A happy marriage of science and religion.
I was astonished by this book's ability to analyze and typologize scientific activity within a framework of religious wisdom. It not only generates a field of relative connectivity between scientific disciplines, but places them as a whole within the spiritual and mythological activities of the human psyche. It reassures me regarding the fate of humanity that there are educated, well-trained and perceptive individuals who can see the connection between the imagination and human knowledge, and who in turn recognize human moral responsibility for an authentic embodiment of religious teaching through the renunciation of violence. Einstein is quoted as having said, "Religion without science is blind; science without religion is lame." This work has both vision and movement, both clarity and feeling. It provides a perennial balm in an age where specialization brings its own forms of nihilism, and where human violence is too often normalized with the most egregious and potentially catastrophic of consequences. It both clears the mind and calls to the soul. It seemed, to me, to awaken hope for the future of our species.

The story of Lilli Laval will capture you completely.
I have read this wonderful novel at least four times. It is wonderfully written and really makes you feel like you know Ms. Laval personally as well as feeling like you are actually in Paris instead of on the bus reading. I keep looking for something similar from Ms. Ellis, but haven't found anything yet. Please keep writing Ms. Ellis.

The Other Revolution: Russian Evangelical Awakenings
Published in Paperback by Abilene Christian Univ Pr (November, 1996)
Authors: Geoff Ellis and Wesley Jones
Average review score:

Foundations for the Spread of New Testiment Christianity
From the Book's Introduction: "This work tells the little known story of the Russian Christian Evangelical awakening during the years of 1874 - 1928. It details the development as a direct consequence of the availability of the Bible in the Russian language precisely at the time when widespread acceptance was possible - the years of social reform following the freeing of the serfs in 1861 under Tsar Alex II. The authors conclude that for a brief time, the revival was a viable alternative to the nihilistic developments that ultimately led to the overthrow of the imperial regime. They chronicle a growth - despite unrelenting opposition - which was sufficient to change forever the heart of Russia. The work is submitted with the belief that the Russian spiritual soil has been cultivated by decades of hardship and struggle. They believe that the planting of the seed by the 'Gospel Christians' movement described in the book will finally result in an unparalleled harvest in Russia during the third millennium."

I found this book greatly encouraging for the prospects of a proliferation of raw New Testiment Christianity in Russia. Although they warn about the lionizing of Pashkov and Prokhanov, it is extremely helpful and enlightening to closely study their experience evangelizing Russia. This book is a must read for anyone doing or supporting Christian misson work in Russia. Also, of great importance, this book is short, fast moving, and easy to read at 220 pages. The authors give the important facts without getting bogged down on tangents. The time for Russia is NOW!!!!! The window of opportunity has been open for arguably 30 years of Russia's 2000 year history. GET INVOLVED!!! I question whether the West's track record since the fall of the Berlin Wall should be judged in terms of accomplishment or opportunity squandered!!! Are you willing to set on the sidelines and let this opportunity go by???

Out Takes: Essays on Queer Theory and Film (Series Q)
Published in Hardcover by Duke Univ Pr (Txt) (May, 1999)
Author: Ellis Hanson
Average review score:

Essential Reading
Everything you'd expect and hope to find in a scholarly work on film and queer theory, and a good many surprises. Ellis Hanson's well edited collection has found its way onto numerous college reading lists and will doubtless stay on them for years to come as this is indeed a seminal volume in the history (brief as it is) of queer theory and film. Academic yet readable and engaging, these essays leave behind discussion of queer films in terms of whether or not they contain "good" or "positive" representations of gay men and lesbians, and rather celebrate what is illusive, problematic, complex, and interesting about the queer themes and characters that have appeared in film since its earliest days.
Hanson's own essay tackles lesbian vampire films, a genre which most critics and film theorists have seldom taken seriously. By the time he's done with it, however, you can't imagine how lesbian vampires could have been igorned for so long. The book, like Hanson's essay, invites us into new and unfamiliar territory and rewards us with fascinating perspectives and analytic energy that can only come when scholars are turned loose on fresh subject matter.
Although talking about anything "queer" is apt to offend certain constituencies, these essays cannot be lightly dismissed. The book is challenging, provocative, and absolutely essential reading for anyone who is interested in queer theory, film, or both.
